Three More Players Withdraw From ATP Geneva Open

It promises to be a great week at the ATP Geneva Open. Many top players are set to feature, including Novak Djokovic, who accepted a wild card into the event. Nicolas Jarry was the first player to withdraw from the Geneva Open. This is not surprising. The Chilean progressed to his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Italian Open. Recovering physically and mentally from his efforts in Rome would have been difficult. For this reason, Jarry has decided to not play until the French Open begins on May 26th.

Jan-Lennard Struff was the second player to withdraw from the Geneva Open. The German has enjoyed a very successful clay-court season so far, including winning his maiden ATP title on home soil in Munich. No physical problems have been confirmed, with the 34-year-old appearing to want some extra rest before the start of the French Open.

Kei Nishikori was the third player to withdraw from the Geneva Open. The 2014 US Open runner-up’s injuries have been constant in recent years. Since the 2021 Indian Wells Open, Nishikori has only played in two ATP Tour events and three Challenger tournaments. This withdrawal is yet another unfortunate setback for the former Japanese No. 1.

Who Replaces Those Three Players In The Draw?

Max Purcell is set to feature at the Geneva Open after Jarry’s decision to withdraw. The Australian has not played on clay since the Madrid Open, with the 26-year-old electing to play at hard court events on the Challenger Tour since then. Purcell will hope that rustiness is not an issue for him on the dirt in Switzerland.

Roberto Carballes Baena replaces Struff at the Geneva Open. The Spaniard’s impressive showings so far during the clay-court season include a run to the final in Marrakech and a victory in Barcelona against Lorenzo Musetti. That proves how difficult an opponent he is on clay when he produces his best tennis.

Finally, Flavio Cobolli is also in the draw due to Nishikori withdrawing. He came close to overcoming Sebastian Korda at the Italian Open but lost narrowly in three sets. The Italian now has a chance to build on that and gain further momentum for the French Open in Geneva.
